I was a little disappointed by this book. It’s not because of the quality of the writing, because Fleming was a decent enough writer, although he was occasionally racist or misogynistic, and it’s not because of the characters, either. It’s just the story line, or what passes for one – it just feels like nothing actually happens. Oh sure, Bond gets given a mission and trains up for it, but the mission itself is almost over before it begins.
Now, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t read it. I just think you should be careful. There are other, better Bond books – including Casino Royale, the first in the series – and while you don’t necessarily need to read the series in order, you might as well start with a book that will grab you and make you pay attention.
It’s a competent story in which Bond goes out in search of Dr. Shatterhead, a supervillain that Bond has met before. I’m not going to tell you who it is, though.
