Yeah, this one’s a no from me I’m afraid. It’s a shame because I’ve read and enjoyed some of her stuff in the past, but that was when I was reading the Penguin Mini Modern box set and so I kind of breezed my way through. Here, I had to commit a little more, and it probably didn’t help that the blurb itself didn’t really grab me.

Part of that is probably because it’s based on Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and I’ve never read that. On the plus side, I did enjoy the Jamaican patois, which led to this interesting situation in which I enjoyed the dialogue because of the way that it was written whilst simultaneously not giving a damn about what people were talking about. I can see why this book is important, it just isn’t for me. So yeah.
