The buddy read of the Wizard of Oz series continues! I’ve been reading them with my YouTube friend Joel Swagman, and we’ve been tackling one book every couple of weeks. The last one was a little bit of a disappointment, but I did enjoy this one some more, although it’s not quite at the heights that the earlier books in the series were able to achieve.

I’m also not sure if it’s my imagination, but it seemed as though this one was a little longer. It’s hard to tell, because the page counts could lie to me as I’ve been reading different versions from different publishers. It did feel as though Baum was able to settle into the story some more here though, instead of half the book feeling as though he was trying to find a way to tie it all up.

I also enjoyed the Nome King as an antagonist, including his back story. And overall, this book does go to show that Baum had a cracking imagination, if nothing else.
