Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, I received a copy of this for free to review.
I wasn’t too sure what to expect with this one – Koch promises to teach you the science of success, and he certainly doesn’t disappoint. He uses established scientific principles and theories to simplify and explain the complex world of business, and it’s magnificent.
True, occasionally you have to take a leap of faith, but that’s because Koch uses established science as a metaphor, rather than offering it up as a direct comparison. In many ways, that’s what makes this book such a great read – you’ll learn a hell of a lot about business, but you’ll learn a hell of a lot about science, too.
In fact, it’s the science that I found fascinating – there’s so much we know, as a species, about the world and the way it works, but there’s also a lot that we don’t know, too. Nevertheless, it’s fascinating to read about Richard Dawkins’ meme theory and to discover how it applies to concepts and ideas in business, just as it’s fascinating to have your mind blown by chaos theory and then restored with a dose of sanity.
Now, I work in social media marketing, and there were dozens of concepts that I can apply straight off the bat during my day job. And I’m willing to bet that it would be the same for anyone – Koch’s concepts are simple enough to understand, and when you think of them as a basis for your own experimentation, they become exponentially more powerful.
Go buy a copy of this and then read it. Then figure out how you can apply what you’ve learned to your own business, whatever that may be.
