I didn’t even know this book existed until I discovered it in a charity shop, but I’m glad that I did – it’s a beautiful short novella by one of my favourite authors. Pullman writes for young adults, and you’ve probably heard of his His Dark Materials trilogy, and here he delivers yet another fantastic story line, and with a flourish.

It reminded me of a cross between a fairy tale and a fantasy novel, and it certainly has touches of both – there’s a moral to be had, but I’m not going to spoil it by revealing it. Let’s just say that this is a novel that kids of all ages can enjoy.
