Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - A Study in Scarlet

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – A Study in Scarlet

A Study in Scarlet is a literary milestone, the first ever work to feature crime’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his sidekick, the eminent Dr. John Watson. The pair went on to become one of the most well-known duos in literary history.

I’ll be honest – almost all of Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books are going to earn a nine or above, and it’s all with good reason. Here, he uses an interesting technique that he was to repeat in later works – he splits the book in to two, with the first half dealing with the mystery and the second half covering the full background to the case. It’s a fantastic technique, and Conan Doyle is a master.
