Philip Pullman – The Tin Princess
I have a lot of love for The Tin Princess – it’s one of Philip Pullman’s Sally Lockhart books, and so you know you’re in for a lot of fun. Here, we find out what happens to young Adelaide, who was last seen at the end of The Ruby in the Smoke, and we get to know some of our other characters more than ever before.
And because I read the rest of the books in the series, it was a lot of fun to see how they all ended up – they’re all older here, and some of them are missing entirely, but you still get a good idea of what happened to them, even if you didn’t read the rest of the books in the series. I also vividly remember a lot of imagery, like an old train and blood in the snow. But that’s about as much as you’re getting out of me when it comes to the plot.
What I will say, though, is that you’re in for a treat, a story of power and espionage that stretches all of the way across Europe, and our heroes face themselves at the centre of a baffling web that gets untangled beautifully at the end, when everything all falls together and we finally understand what’s happening. It’s rare that a book does this well – you know how sometimes you have to read and re-read something to get it? That doesn’t happen here, but that’s not a problem – it didn’t stop me from re-reading it. It’s just that sort of book, for me at least – I hope you love it, too.
