Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, I received a copy of this for free to review.
This one was a hard one to rate, because there’s nothing technically wrong with it – I just didn’t enjoy the author’s writing style, which is often over-complicated and difficult to follow. Let’s pick a sentence at random: “As her eyes fluttered shut, her head pressed against the cold glass, the sting from countless wounds that had motivated and inspired Jack to corporate and sexual boldness, temporarily subsided and the pacifying beauty of Rebecca’s dreams soothed her star-crossed life, transporting her far from the doomed abyss she was incarcerated in into a world that was beyond harm.”
See, it’s a bit of a mouthful, and there are a lot of unnecessary adjectives. But if you can overlook that then at least the subject matter is pretty good – the author follows several characters as their love grows more and more tortured, whether it’s the love of a woman for her abusive husband or the love that a parent has for their ‘possessed‘ child. I soldiered on through it, but I probably wouldn’t read it again – you’ll have to decide for yourself whether to take the plunge.
