Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, I received a copy of this for free to review.

It’s always a bit awkward when someone sends you a book for free and then you discover that you really don’t like it, but that’s what happened here. I don’t even know where to begin, but I’ll try to keep my feedback constructive because I know that the author has put out a number of books in this series and so she does at least have some dedication.

My main problem here was the writing – it was over-simple and child-like, whilst still a little clunky. It didn’t flow properly, reading more like a transcript of someone chatting to a friend over a telephone than the manuscript for a novel. I read recently about ‘bumps‘, a term that editors use to refer to any part of a book that causes the reader to stop for a second and to question what they’ve just read – this book, unfortunately, was full of them.

And the story-line wasn’t for me, either – it was about ice-skating (as the title suggests), but it was hard to follow what was happening if you don’t know anything about the sport. I thought I had a passing interest in it, but reading this kind of killed my curiosity – I hate to say it, but I feel like even if you absolutely loved ice skating, this book might be a bit too much for you.

My advice to Janet would be to keep writing and to read as much as possible to build up a better grasp of the English language, and to find a decent editor to work with. With a bit of work, this could be readable.
