Haruki Murakami – What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

This book is basically what it sounds like from its title. Murakami is a keen runner and has competed in at least one marathon per year for a number of years. In this book, he talks about his approach to running and how it’s similar to working on a novel, which means it’s a bit like Stephen King’s On Writing. It’s part memoir, part how-to.

Now, I’m no long distance runner, but I do jog from time to time. I have a passing interest in the subject, but that passing interest was all I needed to enjoy this, and I think you could get a lot out of this whether you’re a runner or not. Of course, it also helps that I’m a writer and a Murakami fan, too. That all came together to make a pretty interesting read, but it’s not the kind of book that will change my life. Maybe it’ll change yours.
