Leonard Cohen – Poems and Songs
You might be wondering why I included ‘Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets’ in the title – it’s usually not my style to include the publisher or the series in the headline. In this instance, it’s because as far as I can tell, this book doesn’t actually have a title. In fact, I’m not sure whether I’ll be able to find it on Amazon to link to it.
Sure, it has the Everyman blurb on the front cover and there’s nothing else to be seen apart from the author’s name and a photograph of him in portrait. It doesn’t even have a name on the spine. And then inside, it says ‘Poems and Songs’. What’s a reviewer supposed to think?
Anyway, once you get past that, this is actually a lovely collection of some of Cohen’s best work, presented alongside the quasi-poetic lyrics that form the backbone of his highly successful career as a recording artist. Cohen is one of those rare Renaissance men who posses many talents – he can sing, he can write music, he can play guitar, he can write poetry, he can write prose, and he could write his way out of a jail cell, if he needed to.
While it’s not as comprehensive as it could be, this pocket-sized collection is a must-have for any old school Leonard Cohen fan or poetry reader.
