Graham Greene – The End of the Affair
Graham Greene is on top form here, with a novel about a love affair that flourished during the Blitz and ended just as abruptly as the Second World War. Maurice Bendrix, disappointed with the loss of his love, hires a private detective, and the rest, as they say, is history.
He had a knack for capturing the most intensely human side of his characters, and he pulls it off here with the sort of aplomb that’s usually reserved for his more serious novels, and it’s a level of aplomb that’s very welcome. You might not necessarily get on with Bendrix, but you will at least understand what motivates him, and that’s half of the battle.
Overall, if you’re looking to read some Greene, whether you’re a newbie or a fan, you can’t get much better.
