I have a confession to make. I bought Matilda at a car boot sale because I thought I hadn’t read it, but when I started to actually read it, I realised I was wrong. And I don’t just mean that I remembered the plot, because I could have got that from the movie. I remembered the prose as well. Like, individual sentences. It was a pretty surreal feeling.
But despite this, I wouldn’t say this is Dahl’s best. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of fun, but it’s just missing a certain something. It reminds me of The Witches, which just didn’t have the same feel as some of his other books, except The Witches actually scared me while Matilda was just kind of so-so. But then I’m the same with the movie, and I’m probably one of the few people in my generation that could take it or leave it.
Still, that’s not to say that you won’t enjoy this, because you will. You just might not enjoy it as much as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or James and the Giant Peach. Either way, if you’re a serious Dahl fan then it’s one to add to your collection, and it’d be a great bedtime read for kids who feel like they don’t fit in at school. I mean, let’s face it – all of his books are worth reading. They’re classics.
