It was really weird to read this, because I’ve seen the Disney movie so many times - it’s interesting to look at the parallels and the differences between the two, but it is also disconcerting. It’s pretty rare that, when reading a book, I can’t get the imagery of the movie out of my head, but that happened here.
Still, Kipling is still celebrated long after his death for a very good reason - he’s a writer of talent and of note, from the oldschool generation in which writers were real writers. He’s showing his skill at its best here, and even if you ignore everything else and focus purely on the manuscript, his work still stands up to the test of time.
I’d say this ought to be recommended reading, both for you and for your children - it’s a true children’s classic, and I suspect it will continue to be loved for many more years to come. It’s that sort of book.
